Biography and scrapbook of John McLean, surveyor, explorer, fur-trader, of the Hudsons Bay Company, Guelph, and Elora, 1800-1890. 1800- 1890.

Born Isle of Mull 1800, employed by H.B. Co. in 1820. Educated by Father Gilbert. After travelling across continent to Peace River and down through B.C. He was sent by Governor Simpson to explore a trade route through Labrador from north to south arriving at Ungava (Fort Chimo). Early summer 1839 he tried water route, led to discovery of great falls on Hamilton River, Labrador Aug. 9, 1840. After serveral expeditions he resigned 1846. Was an agent of Bank of Montreal, Guelph and was Clerk of Division Court, Elora.
